In 1981, a young ambitious couple, Jimmy and Carol Jordan of Waltham, purchased a take-out restaurant in Ellsworth, now known as Jordan’s Snack Bar! They set out to establish a family-oriented, seasonal take-out featuring consistently great seafood, burgers, ice cream and the best onion rings made fresh daily. Sons Shawn and Michael both became involved in the business at a young age and quickly developed the same work ethic as their parents.
Over the years, the business grew and the buildings expanded. On busy days, you would find Carol at the window, Shawn and Michael on the cooking line and Jimmy racing around the parking lot making sure trash was emptied and everything was spotless! You might even have seen Carol’s mother, “Grammy” washing dishes! In no time, Jordan’s became a summertime tradition for both locals and tourists. It’s a rite of passage each spring, when Jordan’s opens for the season! Despite the sometimes nasty March weather, folks come from miles around for their favorite Jordan’s treats!
As Jordan’s business grew, Jimmy added more outdoor seating and a playground for the kids. A 120-seat, air-conditioned dining room is just steps away from the take-out windows, for cool and rainy days or for hot and humid summer days. There’s also an arcade building with games for young and old! A covered gazebo hosts weekly live bands on Wednesdays during Cruise-In season, and offers another seating option for outdoor dining.
Jimmy Jordan always believed in giving back to his community. Wednesday night Cruise-Ins were his way of thanking customers for supporting his family’s business. He wanted to give local people the chance to hear live bands – and do a little dancing – at no charge! He invited people with antique and classic cars to display their vehicles on the lot he purchased next door. The concept quickly caught on and continues today from May through September. From line dancers to cute little kids, everyone enjoys Cruise-In Night at Jordan’s!
The Jordan’s tradition is carried on today by Carol and son, Shawn, who proudly continue Jimmy’s legacy to the community in all aspects of their business. Son, Michael, now runs his own successful auto sales and repair business just down the road. Shawn’s son, Andrew, can now also be seen on the cooking line daily and is further proof that the apple does not fall far from the tree in the Jordan family!
